Layover In Detroit (DTW)

The site that would later become Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) has been in operation since 1930. One of the busiest airports in America, the airport is constantly being upgraded and extended, with new airport parking and proposals for an additional runway. It’s the largest hub and major international gateway for Northwest Airlines, so if you’re traveling with that airline, you might find yourself there. The airport is only 20 miles from the city of Detroit, Michigan, giving plenty of time to check out local attractions when on a layover.
Motown’s History: Detroit is the Motor City, the ancestral home of much of the world’s early automotive industry. That in turn gave rise to the Motown Sound, the distinctive music that grew to worldwide popularity from its birthplace here. The Motown Historical Museum is a great place to begin your layover tour. Founded by Esther Gordy Edwards in 1985, the museum attracts thousands of visitors each year. There are photos and other memorabilia from the Motown era. The tour guides are knowledgeable and by the end of your tour you will have immersed yourself in this period of musical history.
Automotive Exhibits: If you want to explore the famous aspect of Detroit, two museums give you the chance to do just that. The Henry Ford Museum has a wide range of exhibits, but the most interesting for car buffs is the Automobile in American Life display: letters, memorabilia and cars, cars, cars from every era. This exhibit is famous - and rightly so. For another view of the city, check out the Detroit Historical Museum, which covers all aspects of its history and culture. One of the highlights is the Motor City exhibit, where you can see how a car is assembled from start to finish.
Other Great Attractions: If you still have time on your layover, then there are many other things to do in Detroit. The Detroit Institute of Arts is said to have one of America’s best art collections. The Charles H Wright Museum of African American History is another unmissable attraction. The And Still We Rise permanent exhibit tracks history from prehistoric Africa to the present. if time is limited and you just want to get a feel for the city, wander around downtown and visit Greektown and the Eastern Market.
