Could you leave everything behind and take to the road in nothing more than an RV? That’s exactly what psychiatrist Doreen Onion did, along with her husband, also a psychiatrist. She has published her adventures in Queen of the Road: The True Tale of 47 States, 22,000 Miles, 200 Shoes, 2 Cats, 1 Poodle, a Husband and a Bus with a Will of its Own. The book is a hilarious account of their year on the road.

Doreen and Tim are an odd couple - polar opposites, in fact. She’s a Long Island princess, he loves the outdoors. When Tim suggests taking to the road for year, Doreen wonders why he can’t have a normal midlife crisis. Somewhat to her surprise, she finds herself in a luxury RV – complete with pets – and the adventure begins.

As the trip progresses, there are amusing and tender moments, and Doreen also begins to question her own attitudes, as seen here:

When I met another of my e-mail/phone buddies, I immediately felt cheated: All those years without knowing I had a much younger friend with dreadlocks. Yet if I had seen her in a coffee shop in Boulder, I would have thought I had nothing in common with one still in her twenties and so hip.

This left me wondering how I became so narrow. As a physician, I was trained to gather information and make judgments about people, but now I wondered if perhaps that training hadn’t served me terribly well. (Do medical schools give refunds?) What else was I missing by being blinded by the belief that I had all the facts?

This journey is not just physical, but makes Doreen step out of her comfort zone and grow. Their adventures and misadventures through this process are recounted with a great deal of wit. By the end of the year, Doreen finds that she has not only survived a year on the road, but has thrived on it.
