The Gadget Traveler - Interview

While browsing around travel sites I recently found a blog called the Gadget Traveler. I loved the concept, which site owner Brian explains further in this interview.

Why did you start the Gadget Traveler blog?

I like gadgets and I like travel and though there are many gadget related sites, there are not as many that focus on travel gadgets / gear. I created the Gadget Traveler so that I could share interesting travel related gadgets with others; it’s still evolving…

What do you consider a travel gadget?

This is something that makes traveling fun and or makes traveling easier. It can be something as simple as a uniquely designed luggage tag, that helps you locate your luggage faster or a camera that can upload your shots to a website using a wifi connection. Even in the current economic climate, I think there is a large market for gadgets and gear that help to make travel easier and more enjoyable.

What’s your favorite travel gadget and why?

A camera. Because even though memories are powerful, it’s nice to have a physical reminder of places I have visited. I make sure I have a camera with me at all times (even if it is just a cell phone camera), as the best photo opportunities usually happen when you least expect them to.

What’s on your travel gadget wishlist for this year?

I like to have access to the internet when traveling, so top of my list for this year is the Apple MacBook, because I would like to make the switch from PC to a Mac and the MacBooks are relatively easy to travel around with. Second on the list would be a DSLR camera. I miss using my old SLR camera and would like to make the step up from my current Canon SD790 ‘point and shoot’. One of the consumer models from Canon or Nikon would be nice.

What’s your travel resume?

For the majority of my life I lived in the United Kingdom (favorite spots include: Lake District, North Yorkshire, Northumberland and the Cotswolds), but over the past 7 years I have lived in Tampa, Florida, Greenville, North Carolina and currently Puerto Rico in the sunny Caribbean. I love to travel and my resume includes:

  • Kenya
  • Canada, West Coast
  • British Virgin Islands
  • France
  • Spain
  • Crete
  • Cyprus
  • Turkey
  • Germany
  • Several US cities up and down the east coast

What’s your favorite destination and why?

This is an easy one. Several years ago I visited Kenya for a seven day safari. This is by far the best vacation I have had. Being able to get so close to the Big 5 was just amazing.

Do you have any other travel blogs?

The Gadget Traveler is my second blog, my first is a Puerto Rico Travel Guide. The site provides ideas and up to date information for anyone planning a trip to the Caribbean island. The site started as a way for me to adjust to living in a new country and it has grown from there.

When you’re not blogging about travel, what else do you do?

We have a 15 month old boy and so as you can imagine he is the main focus of my time.

Where would you like to go that you haven’t been to yet, and why?

Tuscany, Italy. The landscape and the villages look so amazing. Would love to spend a week or more just traveling around staying in small B&B type hotels. Bonus; the food and wine would be awesome too.

Favorite book about travel?

Not a book as such, but I love the Wanderlust travel magazine, I think it is one of the best travel magazines available; great photography and great articles.

Best music for traveling?

I just entered a competition recently where I had to pick 10 songs that I would listen to while traveling. My list was dominated by artists popular in the UK in the late 70s / 80s such as The Alarm, Cranberries, OMD and U2. So I’d have to say that would be my best music for traveling.

Complete the sentence: travel is ….
