Pack It Up! - Online Packing List Tools

Forgetting an essential item is a nightmare when traveling on business or vacation. One of the best ways to avoid the hassle is to have a packing list. But what should be on it? These online packing list tools will help you to decide.

OneBag

OneBag.com has a one page packing list that features most of the items you will ever need to take. The site is designed for those planning to travel light, so you may wish to add a few items. A checklist version of the list is also available for download.

Universal Packing List

The Universal Packing List generates your list depending on dates, temperature, gender, accommodation, activities and size of bag, among others. Fill in the variables and you get a packing list that is ideal for your trip. I wasn’t sure that I needed the vaccinations suggested, but the list of things to do before leaving could be helpful.

PackWhiz

You’ll need a Google Account to sign in for PackWhiz. It works much the same way as the Universal Packing List, but it stores your list online, so you can check off items as you complete them. It’s also easy to add additional items or generate a new list from scratch.

TravelSense

TravelSense has an online list generator which bases the list on accommodations, activities, gender and weather. I liked the fact that you could select multiple weather conditions (great for the temperamental English weather I’ll be experiencing on my next trip), but the resulting list seemed rather short.

PackingListOnline

This site uses many of the same variables as the others, but allows you to be more specific about the weather and the age of the people you are packing for. You have to enter variables on several pages before getting the list, which makes it more cumbersome to use than many of the other choices.

Other Lists

On Independent Traveler, there’s a single page where you tick the items you want and add your own. Then press a button to generate your own packing list. Travellers Point provides a single page list which you can export to Word, Excel or PDF. However, you can’t edit it. And if you’re prepared to register, you can also get a personalized packing list at Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush.

What do you use to keep track of the items you need to pack?
