What Kind Of Packer Are You?
I’m heading off on another trip. A couple of months ago I read Sheila Scarborough’s post on the Vacation Departure Maniac and it got me to thinking about the different types of packers there are.
How do you pack when you travel?
Last Minute Larry
Last minute Larry is so laid back that he knows he can pack whatever he needs in five to ten minutes. He doesn’t even bother to get out cases or bags until the actual day of travel and is unlikely to do any pre-trip planning – isn’t buying the ticket enough? Of course Larry is most likely to forget something essential, but is so laid back he doesn’t care.
Most likely to say:”Of course I’ve got time for another drink before I head to the airport.”
Lightweight Letty
Lightweight Letty makes a virtue of packing light – in fact, it’s almost ridiculous how little she travels with. She can go anywhere with only a carryon. Her carryon bag will hold essential toiletries (these can always be supplemented by what the hotel provides), a change of clothes and some travel wash. Letty’s the least likely to have any excess baggage charges.
Most likely to say: “I’m pretty sure this wrap will work for the beach AND the restaurant – and I can always wash it out.”
Listmaking Lucas
Lucas never panics about packing because he has a list. In fact, he has several – one for each kind of trip he might have to take. Packing is simply a matter of printing out the list and working his way through it methodically. Of course, following the list rigidly for fear of leaving something out means that excess baggage charges are always a possibility and if something hasn’t made it onto the list, it will never get packed.
Most likely to say: “I must add that to the packing list”.
Loony Lucy
Even though Lucy is a seasoned traveler, she always gets in a frenzy when it’s packing time. Whether she makes lists or prefers to wait for packing inspiration to strike, Lucy gets really uptight about having everything in its place. She also likes to go it alone and is most likely to kick everyone out of the room so she can organize the packing just the way she likes it.
Most likely to say: “Nooooo!!! If you put those books at the top they will completely crush my linens. Just let me do it, OK?”
I must confess to combining the qualities of Lucas and Lucy. What kind of packer are you?

I pack ever inch of my suitcase full. I roll every article of clothing and I pack the day before. I’m not sure what category I fit in.

Sounds like you have a good system, Debo Hobo – organized and early enough to add anything you need at the last minute.

I’m very good at packing….unless I don’t deal with it until the last minute. Then I am, indeed, the Departure Maniac.
